Dutch onion CIF Dakar price estimator
The monthly Dutch onion export value per tonne, plus your sea freight and insurance, as an indicative CIF Dakar price per tonne and per 25 kg bag.
The FOB input is the declared export value per tonne for onions shipped from the Netherlands to West Africa (Eurostat Comext, CN 07031019), shown on the export price page. EU trade statistics record exports free on board at the exporting country's border, so it is an FOB figure, but it is a monthly average across all shipments published two to three months late, not a quote. The freight default is CMA CGM's published reefer rate of €1,600 per 40 ft container from Antwerp or Rotterdam to Dakar, effective October 1, 2023 (AJOT); FreshPlaza reported in March 2022 that a container of onions from the Netherlands to Senegal had cost about €2,100 in 2020 and €3,500 in the most recent season (FreshPlaza). Rates move with fuel and vessel space, so put in a current quote. 28 tonnes is the volume ceiling for bagged onions in a 40 ft high-cube reefer (container loading guide). Under the Incoterms CIF rule the seller insures the cargo for at least 110% of the contract price (ICC Academy), so the premium is your rate times 110% of CIF; the 0.3% default is a placeholder for your insurer's rate. Port charges at Dakar sit outside a CIF price and are added separately. A bag is 25 kg, 40 to the tonne. This is arithmetic on the figures you enter, indicative only, not a quote or an offer.

How the estimate is built
Start from the FOB value per tonne, the onions loaded on board at Rotterdam, Antwerp or Vlissingen. Spread the container's sea freight and any extra freight charges over the tonnes in the box and add them, which gives the CFR price, cost and freight to Dakar. Insurance comes last: the CIF rule has the seller cover the cargo for 110% of its value, so the premium is the rate times 110% of the CIF price, and the calculator solves for the CIF figure that includes its own premium. Dividing by 40 turns a tonne into 25 kg bags.
What the live figure is, and is not
The prefilled FOB value is the newest month of EU trade statistics for the Netherlands to West Africa lane: the declared value of every shipment that month divided by the tonnage. It tells you the level the trade cleared at, which no indication can, but no single cargo traded at it and it runs two to three months behind. Replace it with an offer in hand when you have one.
FOB, CFR and CIF on this lane
FOB stops once the onions are on board in the Netherlands or Belgium. CFR adds ocean freight to Dakar. CIF adds the seller's cargo insurance on top of that. Unloading charges at Dakar, import duties and inland transport are outside all three. Dutch onion FOB prices to Dakar covers the lane and the Senegal import window, and how freight changes the delivered price walks through the same FOB plus freight split on the US side.
Common questions
What is the CIF price of Dutch onions in Dakar?
No CIF Dakar price is published, so it has to be built from the FOB value. At the August 2026 Eurostat export value of €375 a tonne, €1,600 of sea freight spread over 28 tonnes and insurance at 0.3% of 110% of CIF, the indicative CIF Dakar figure is €434 a tonne, or €10.84 per 25 kg bag. The calculator redoes the sum with your own freight quote and insurance rate.
What is the difference between FOB and CIF for onions?
FOB Rotterdam or Antwerp is the price of the onions loaded on board at the European port, with the sea leg still to come. CIF Dakar adds the ocean freight and the seller's cargo insurance to the destination port. Charges at Dakar after unloading, import duty and inland transport are the buyer's under both terms.
How much does it cost to ship a container of onions from the Netherlands to Dakar?
There is no published live rate. The most recent published carrier tariff for the lane is CMA CGM's reefer rate of €1,600 per 40 ft container from Antwerp or Rotterdam to Dakar, effective October 2023, and FreshPlaza reported in March 2022 that container costs to Senegal had risen from about €2,100 in 2020 to €3,500. Rates move with fuel and vessel space, so the calculator takes your own quote.
