About onion pack sizes
Onions ship wholesale in three standard packs, and USDA quotes each one separately. The 50-lb sack is the workhorse of the trade and the pack most shipping-point quotes are written against: a mesh or poly bag of one size, the pack the storage crop moves in, bought by repackers, foodservice distributors and retail distribution centers taking whole pallets. The 25-lb sack is the half-size pack for buyers who cannot turn fifty pounds before the onions go soft, smaller foodservice accounts and distributors serving independent grocers, and it is the pack the red trade runs on. The 40-lb carton is the rigid box, used where a bag will not do: Vidalia, Walla Walla and the other sweet onions bruise easily and carry a brand, so they ship in cartons that stack cleanly, and Peru's repacked jumbos quote here too.
A USDA shipping-point price is written per package, not per pound, so every figure on this page is dollars for one sack or carton loaded at the packing shed, before freight. Compare packs per pound, never per package. A 25-lb sack does not cost half a 50-lb sack, because bagging, handling and freight cost close to the same per package, and part of a carton's premium over a sack is the box and the grading behind it.
