Everything else on this site is USDA shipping-point data for the US market. This is EU trade statistics, and the two are separate markets in separate currencies on separate calendars. Read the figure for exactly what it is. Eurostat publishes, month by month, the total customs-declared value of the onions a country exported to each destination and the tonnage that went with it. Dividing one by the other gives the declared export value per tonne shown above. EU external-trade statistics record exports on an FOB basis at the exporting country's border, so the basis is free on board at a Dutch or Belgian port, which is the same basis a shipper means by an FOB Rotterdam or FOB Antwerp quote. What it is not is a quote. It is a monthly average across every shipper, every grade, every size band and every contract on the lane, reported after the fact. Nobody traded at this exact number, and it will not tell you what a container books at next week. It will tell you the level the trade actually cleared at, which no broker's indication can. The volume column is the other half of the story, and on this lane it is the more dramatic half. Senegal suspends onion imports for part of every year to protect the Niayes and river-valley harvest, and the dates move from season to season. When the border is shut the tonnage on the Netherlands to Senegal line collapses to almost nothing and the price per tonne on what little still moves stops meaning much, because a handful of small consignments is not a market. When it reopens the volume steps back up by two orders of magnitude inside a month. Watch the two columns together rather than the price alone. The all-destinations line is here as the control. It is every non-EU market the Netherlands ships onions to, and it normally sits above the West African lane, which is the trade's own arithmetic showing through: West Africa buys volume in mesh bags, and the buyers paying more per tonne are elsewhere.
